Top 30 Quality Measures

Flexible Treatment Options Overall Rank: 20
Allow for patient and/or family preferences for treatment.
Domain : Patient-Centeredness
Patient-centeredness refers to establishing a partnership among practitioners, patients and their families (when appropriate) to ensure that decisions respect patients’ wants, needs and preferences. This includes ensuring that patients have the education and support they need to make their own decisions and participate in their own care.
Additional Domain(s) : Ethnic / Cultural Minorities
Rationale
Minority populations are often underserved when it comes for treatment of depression. Having Quality Improvement (QI) interventions that have modest accommodations for minorities can reduce health disparities and improve quality of care. Supplemental case management improves retention in traditional mental health outpatient care and can improve outcomes in minority populations.
Primary Reference
Miranda J, Azocar F, Organista KC, Dwyer E, Areane P.
Treatment of depression among impoverished primary care patients from ethnic minority groups.
Psychiatr Serv. 2003 Feb;54(2):219-25.
PMID: 12556604
Level of Evidence
I: Consistently higher quality studies specifically focused on primary mental health care.

Summarized CommentsAdd Comment
  • Hard to measure and ambiguous - what if preferences go against evidence?
  • Very critical to a responsive and responsible system. All too often "lip service" is given to family and patient environment, but excuses such as "confidentiality" prevent this from happening.
  • In a short supply economic scenario, like PHMC today, consumers are like early buyers of model T's: "you can have any color they want as long as its black"
